French games to help kids learn french
I personally like older video games. Your ability to play a French video game depends on whether or not your console is region free. When it comes to computer games, you should experience even fewer problems.
As for purchasing the games or finding new games, you have a few options. Fnac is a large online French tech store which offers a wide spread of French and French-language video games. The links I provide are to French websites when possible because you want to make sure that the game you get is the French version. Other game distributors like apps and platforms like Steam let you find games for less money than traditional console or PC games, although the games tend to be smaller, so the language benefit might not be the same.
With Steam and other computer-based distribution platforms you download the Steam software, which allows you to purchase games and play them. Ready to start playing?
Heard of Ubisoft? Among the many video games made in France, the following games are great for learners. Either they have substantial text or listening content or they offer insight into French history or popular culture. If they get it wrong, the teacher wins a point! Print off a Bingo template for each child.
Each Bingo card should be different. The caller should pull out one image and describe it without showing the picture.
Children will then be asked to put a token or something similar on the called image they can hear if it is on their card. Once a child could fill his card, he wins the game! This game is great for testing your children's memory skills by placing a few flash cards in front of them. Allow them to study the cards by saying what the items are in French. Then, ask them to close their eyes while you remove one card.
See if they can tell you which card is missing Shuffle the dominoes by turning them face-down on the table. Then determine who will have the first move. Once all the players have drawn their dominoes, the first player places the first tile on the table and says what it is. As the turn passes from player to player, if someone cannot make a move, he must "pass".
A game ends when a player plays all his tiles. The object of the game is to collect the most matching pairs. The cards can be matching pictures or matching words. Shuffle the cards and lay them out face down on the table. Use the catapult to fire balls at the rows of ducks crossing the screen. Answer questions to win extra points. Your final score is based on ducks hit or missed and the number of questions answered correctly.
This is not a timed game. Test your audio skills by clicking on the right picture for the spoken language - correct answers win sunflowers; the aim of the game is to fill the vase with pretty flowers - high scores leaderboard and bonus points available. Listen carefully! This is our version of the classic early computer game "Breakout" itself a development of the even earlier "Pong" game - we prefer that name where a player controls a bar that knocks a ball or puck around the screen.
Control the beetle with your arrow keys to collect the strawberries and avoid the bees - keep the strawberries by answering the French vocabulary questions. Learning French is suddenly an adventure and each question is vital to the success of the mission A child's playroom needs tidying up - put the picture blocks into the correctly labelled box to score points and clear up the room.
Simple game with nice graphics suitable for children as young as 5. Move the cat with the arrow keys to catch the white mice. Avoid the red balloons but hit the blue balloons. Your final score is based on all of the above plus number of questions answered correctly and the time taken.
Match items of vocabulary to the correct picture to clear these cells revealing a large picture previously hidden by that content. Pelmanism is an age old favourite with language teachers and students alike. The writing test is harder than the multiple choice but is important if you wish to be able to write French as well as speaking it!
As you can see from the screenshot, there is a Help button if you get stuck To start using French Games click here or on the "Start" button at the top of the page. On the Start page you choose the first topic you want to learn. Once you have worked through these lesson activities, play a few games to reinforce the French for your selected topic.
Then finally try our two tests - multiple choice and writing - to make sure you have learned the language correctly. If you are a parent, you may want to check out our parents page for more information on how your child should use French Games to enhance their French language learning.
We also have a YouTube channel for French learners with lots of video tutorials!
